7 Real Wedding Moments Only a Wedding Cartoonist Could Tell You

Being a live wedding cartoonist means I’m often sitting right in the middle of the action, pen in hand, ears wide open. After 26+ years and countless receptions, I’ve seen it all — from tractors to tornado-force winds. Here are seven true stories from behind my easel:
1. The Groom Who Wouldn’t Smile (Until He Saw My Drawing)
At a gorgeous Indian-Christian wedding on Tybee Island, the groom just wasn’t a smiler. Not in photos, not in person, not even when his bride leaned on his shoulder. I finally told him, “You don’t have to smile — but I’m going to make you look like you do.” When he saw the caricature, he cracked up. Biggest grin of the night, captured forever in ink.
2. The “Surprise” Guest List of 100 Extra People
Picture this: a wedding planned for 200 suddenly became a wedding for 300. Guests just kept showing up — cousins of cousins, neighbors, plus-ones nobody counted. Chairs were flying in from the back closet, caterers were sweating, and I drew non-stop for six hours straight. My markers survived, but barely.
💡 Pro tip: always confirm your RSVPs ahead of time — trust me, you don’t want surprises like that.
3. The Tractor Song Grand Entrance
The bride wanted something elegant. The groom wanted something funny. They couldn’t agree on their entrance music, so the DJ just made an executive decision: cranked up She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy. Watching them strut in to that song while I sketched was… well, unforgettable.
4. When the DJ Showed Up Like He Was Mowing the Lawn
Every guest was dressed to the nines. The bride wore lace. The groomsmen were in tuxedos. I was in professional black. The DJ? Jeans and a dirty polo shirt. He looked like he’d stopped by on his way to cut grass. Pro tip: hire vendors who dress for the occasion.
5. The Gone With the Wind Wedding
March in the South can be a gamble, and this one was blustery. The outdoor ceremony had everyone clutching hats, veils, and programs flying like confetti. We nearly all blew away like Scarlett O’Hara. Thankfully, the reception was indoors. My sketchpad didn’t end up in Mississippi.
6. The Wedding with a Cop on Duty (Who Got Bored)
Half the guests didn’t show. I later overheard the tea: some serious family bad blood. A police officer had been hired “just in case.” He ended up leaning against the wall, eating cake, and watching me draw all night. Easiest shift he ever had.
7. The Photographer Who Left Early — Guess Who Took the Exit Pics?
The bouquet was tossed, the sparkler exit was ready… but the photographer had already packed up and gone. The bride and groom handed me their iPhones and asked if I’d take their big exit shots. So yes, I was both caricature artist and photographer that night. (And no, I didn’t draw selfies of us while they ran through the sparklers — though I was tempted.)
Bonus: The DJ Who Wanted Everyone Out
One reception ended with the DJ blasting Closing Time — and then literally yelling at people to leave. Not exactly the romantic “happily ever after” vibe, but at least the caricatures went home smiling.
✨ Weddings are unpredictable, but that’s what makes them stories worth telling. Caricatures make sure your guests leave with a keepsake, no matter what else goes sideways.
